FACTS ABOUT BANTI SYNDROME

The disorder of the spleen, the large, gland-like organ in the upper left side of the abdomen that produces red blood cells before birth and, in newborns, removes and destroys aged red blood cells, and plays a role in fighting infection is called Banti Syndrome.

Symptoms for Early Stage: 

• weakness

• fatigue

• anemia 

• abnormal enlargement of the spleen 

Symptoms for severe stage:

• bleeding esophagus 

• vomiting of blood 

• passage of dark stools composed of decomposing blood

Moreover, patients with Banti syndrome bruise easily, are more likely to contract bacterial infections and carry a fever for longer periods of time. But primarily, the enlargement of spleen is the main symptom.

However, symptoms may also include abnormal accumulation of fluid in the abdominal cavity or ascites, weakness, fatigue; abnormally low levels of circulating red blood cells or anemia, white blood cells or leukopenia, and/or platelets also called thrombocytopenia, and/or episodes of bleeding known as hemorrhage from the gastrointestinal tract.

Banti syndrome may take place due to a number of different factors causing obstruction of, and abnormally increased blood pressure or hypertension within, certain veins of the spleen or the splenic veins or the liver for instance, hepatic or portal veins. These may include abnormalities present at birth or congenital of such veins, blood clots, or various underlying disorders causing inflammation and obstruction of veins or vascular obstruction of the liver, such as cirrhosis. Increased arsenic intake has also been implicated in some cases. Also, cases have occurred in patients taking long-term azathioprine, particularly after kidney transplantation.

Treatment of Banti syndrome is dependent upon the origin. If a contributing factor such as arsenic or azathioprine is identified, the exposure should be stopped. If you experience some of its symptoms, consult your doctor right away for proper assistance and medication. Do not let the stage t be severe or else it will be too late for your health. Mind simple symptoms and be cured.

SOUP AND HANGOVER

Friday night especially if you go out with your officemates or friends. A simple drink together to cheer everyone or congratulate someone is one of the ways to express gratitude or happiness. But the day after stops the fun you had last night because of... Yes, hangover. Aside from the traditional cure for it, there is a more relaxing way to treat it: Have a bowl of soup.

• Suhlungtang, a soup made from simmered bones and sliced brisket. This cloudy, off-white soup is best eaten with scallions and salt to taste with some rice on the side or thrown in. Ox tail soup is also excellent for those craving meat with a bit more of a gelatinous texture.

• Next is a broth flavored with cinnamon, cloves, and star anise, this pho packs an aromatic punch

• The dark broth is packed flavor with tender chunks of beef, this is a soup that satisfies without leaving you feeling heavy.

• Noodle soup is deep and rich with flavor. This traditional take on beef noodle soup is accentuated by the heat of chili, which will definitely make you forget whatever hangover you may have had. 

• The short rib soup (galbi tang) is as comforting as it gets. With a rich broth accented by tender chunks of galbi off the bone served with multigrain rice and a smattering of side dishes, you are sure to leave feeling fully satisfied.

• Stew is also the answer because of its brothy consistency. The generous portion of beef shank, slightly gelatinous thanks to the tendons that run through it, is a dream for those with a penchant for less popular textures.

HOME REMEDIES FOR RASHES

Red and itchy skin? You probably have skin rashes. Skin rashes are often accompanied by small bumps or other changes in the skin’s color, appearance or texture. They may take place on any part of the body or be usually distributed on large portions of skin. This small yet irritating problem is often caused by issues like eczema, psoriasis, allergies, insect bites, mites, acne, excessive sweating, or contact with certain poisonous plants like poison ivy or oak. Rashes are also caused by soaps, detergents, shampoos or cosmetics that do not suit your skin. They may be a symptom of certain fungal, bacterial, or viral infections as well. If you have a rash that does not improve or go away within a few days, you must consult a doctor. But there are still home remedies to soothe the itch.

First on the list is Aloe Vera which is one of the best natural remedies for rashes due to its anti-bacterial, anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties. It is best for treating all types of skin problems. Apply fresh aloe vera gel to get relief from the rashes fast This is also useful in curing rashes on the face. You can also apply olive oil to get relief from the itching and burning due to the rashes. Next, make chamomile tea and apply it on the rashes to get relief from the itchiness and irritation. You can also use chamomile essential oil over the rashes. Next on the list, you can squeeze a vitamin E capsule and apply its oil on the rashes-affected skin. Go to your kitchen and mix a cup of raw oatmeal in a bucket of water and have bath with this water. You can also apply oatmeal oil for quick relief from rashes.

EFFECTS OF NAIL BITING

Just about all and sundry has had at least one nail-biting moment in his or her life. Perhaps you found yourself with nails between teeth while sitting through an uninteresting class lecture, anticipating a career-changing gathering with your manager, or worriedly watching the fate of your favorite horror-movie heroine. Biting fingernails is a routine that often starts in early days. Studies show 60% of children and 45% of teenagers bite their nails. Nail biting becomes less common after age 18, but it can persist into adulthood. Many adults and children are often unconscious they are biting their nails because doing so has become a habit. The dilemma can range from a mild, occasional habit to an ongoing and more serious hitch.

Biting or picking your nails might also lead to momentary or permanent effects to your actual nail. The majority of the fingernail is produced in the area of the nail bed where there is a "white hill," also called the lunula. The fingernail is made there, as well as the area beneath the lunula that extends down underneath the skin. You may end up with a fingernail that's bumpy or ridge-y. Sometimes these effects are short-term. An infection that lasts a week or two might lead to a funny-looking nail for a short period of time. 

Nail biting has both physical and emotional penalty. Frequently biting your nails and cuticles can leave your fingers red and stinging. The region of skin around your nails may bleed and become impure. Bacteria and viruses passed from your fingers to your face and mouth can make you susceptible to infection. Nail biting can also harm your teeth, leading to poorly aligned, weakened teeth.

The appearance of bitten-down fingernails can also be uncomfortable, which can only add to anxiety and stress.

So stop biting your nails and act like an adult. Remember these effects and you sure will stop.

GARDENING AS THERAPY

Horticultural therapy (HT) is a time-proven practice. The therapeutic benefits of garden environments have been documented since ancient times. In the 19th century, Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and recognized as the "Father of American Psychiatry," was first to document the positive effect working in the garden had on individuals with mental illness. 

Most gardeners would prefer to be busy in the garden, rather than think about how tilling the soil and growing plants affects the mind. But as a psychiatrist and psychotherapist, I cannot resist reflecting on these things. This is partly because of my own gardening experiences but also because there is a renewal of interest in horticultural therapy.

Recent research carried out by the National Gardens Scheme (NGS) showed that more than a third of people questioned (39 per cent) said that being in a garden makes them feel healthier, while 79 per cent believe that access to a garden is essential for quality of life. The survey coincides with the NGS Festival Weekend (June 7-8) when more than 350 gardens will be open, with proceeds to charity.

Although gardens have been considered to be healing spaces since ancient times, Horticultural Therapy only developed as a discipline more recently. As such, there is a considerable amount of research which, although it clearly falls under the heading of Horticultural Therapy, is known by different names. Some of these include:

The therapeutic benefits of being in a garden space are not limited to any particular group. 

Horticultural Therapy may be used to promote positive outcomes of individuals of any age, background or circumstance.

EFFECTS OF CARTOONS ON CHILDREN'S PSYCHOLOGY & BEHAVIOR PATTERNS

Cartoons are the most frequent and easily accessible source of entertainment which we provide to our children. With the vastness of media and extension of channels, it has become easier for children to watch their favorite cartoons on a single click and at the same time it has become more convenient for parents to provide children with this all-time favorite activity of theirs. Time which was previously spent by children in outdoor activities is now replaced, as now they can be found glued to the TV sets for long hours, peering at all sorts of cartoons, mostly without the supervision of elders who are completely unaware that this might have certain effects on their psychological development later on displayed in their behavior patterns.

However, there is evidence that child-based movies have become significantly more violent in recent years and that parents have increased the amount of time they allow their children to watch them. In the past, children watched a limited amount of television and movies. Most children in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, tended to go to the movie theater to watch child-based movies, but since the advent of the VCR, child-based movies are a constant. In fact, in the past “going to the movies” was an exciting event for most children. Why? Not only tto watch a movie, but it also gave them a chance to socialize with friends. With the VCR and CDs, Netlix and the like, movies can also become a solitary, isolative way of life.

It is important to note that a passive lifestyle that consists of spending large amounts of timewatching movies and television can influence a child’s thoughts and behaviors. If a child sees violent, sexual and/or unrealistic child-based movies and cartoons, he or she may internalize these images and concepts and this can contribute to acting them out in school or at home. Emotions from movies and music can also be internalized.

As the 1990s rolled in, toon-agedies reached an all-time high. The appalling effects of such irreverent cartoons as The Simpsons, South Park and Pokemon, have been so well documented I will not delve into them here. Pepe LePew cartoons have been linked to teen pregnancy, Goofy shorts to careless extreme sports injuries and Snorks to scores of teen suicides.

When will this stop? We must follow the example of Turkey and take broadcasters of detrimental cartoons off the air. Future generations need to be free to grow up unabated from the tyrannical thumb of cartoonic oppression.

GET AN A: TIPS TO ACE EXAMS

It's Sunday night, the week before exams: Where are you? Hanging out in the library with a bunch of buds, along with a giant stack of (mostly unread) books and the feeling that there's no way you'll make it to bed before sunrise? Or are you on your own, relad and reviewing your notes and study guides, planning to hit the sheets soon and get up for a nice brain-boosting breakfast? It's pretty obvious that the latter is the more desirable situation, but in reality, most of us are last-minute crammers. Why? Because even the most gifted, dedicated students never really learn how to study. Luckily, it's never too late to integrate new techniques into your test prep routine. Read on—we've got the tips you need to make this finals season a success.

Find your study style. We’re all different – and that includes the way we learn. Before you hit the books, ask yourself whether you’re a visual (see), auditory (hear) or kinaesthetic (hands-on) learner.

Take a caffeine break but don't overdo it. If you find yourself requiring a midday boost, drink a caffeinated beverage right before you take a nap. It takes caffeine about 15 minutes to kick in, so your body will wake you up naturally (but set an alarm just in case). This way you won't oversleep and you'll be twice as alert when you wake up.

Study In Chunks. Although it's tempting (and sometimes inevitable) cramming really isn't the best way to study. According to the Dartmouth Academic Skills Center, you should study in 20-50 minute increments and give yourself a 5 to 10 minute break between each session. For best results, study throughout one full week.

Do the reading before the lecture. Easier said than done (we know!) but it’s also an ideal way to a) get the most out of class, b) reinforce the material twice, and c) impress your teacher with your super on-point questions.

As such, it's especially important to factor food into your study routine! Fruit and nuts are particularly good choices during crunch time. And fuel goes beyond what you're putting in your mouth: Getting enough quality sleep and taking some time to recharge is also super important. After all, what's good for the body is good for the mind.

IT WASN'T ME: WAYS TO COPE UP WITH EMBARASSMENT

Everyone gets embarrassed at some point in time because everyone makes mistakes. Embarrassment may be the result of unwanted attention, a mistake, or being placed in a situation that makes you uncomfortable. You may feel like you want to hide away until the embarrassment passes, but there are better ways to deal with embarrassment. You can try to understand your feelings of embarrassment better, learn to laugh at yourself, and be compassionate to yourself when you become embarrassed.

Keep the right tense. All embarrassment takes place in the past. Theoretically, if you were able to stay in the moment perfectly, you wouldn’t feel an ounce of embarrassment – because all those messages inside your brain belong to a different time and place. Now I realize being present to the moment is virtually impossible when you are experiencing that twisted knot inside your stomach that says things like, “You can’t be trusted with anything, you idiot!” and are feeling the physiological symptoms of embarrassment (somewhat like the flu), but if you can remember for even a minute here or there to pull your attention to the present, you will be relieved of needless angst.

Evaluate the situation. How you handle an embarrassing situation depends on what has happened to embarrass you. For example, if you did something wrong, like made an inappropriate comment to a friend, you may feel embarrassed because you should not have said what you did. But if you feel embarrassed because you did something by accident, like tripping and falling in front of a large group of people, that is a different situation. Each situation requires a slightly different approach to overcome the feelings of embarrassment.

Stay Calm, Cool and Collected. The most important things you must do is stay cool, calm and collected. Take several deep breaths, count backwards from ten and settle yourself down by coming back to the present moment. Within these critical few moments become mindful of where you are, what you’re doing, and of your immediate surroundings. Don’t regret the past or worry about the future. Just settle in the present moment. When you become aware of the moment you will no longer be thinking about other people or about what you’re feeling embarrassed about. Instead you will be focused on yourself and on the peaceful sound of your breath.

In the end we always learn best through stories. When you share stories of your own life experiences with others, you learn from the act of sharing and listening to other people’s perspectives and opinions. And when others share stories with you, you also learn as you try and put yourself in their shoes and live through their experience in your own way. Then you take the lessons and try to apply them into your own life. That’s how we learn. And that’s how you must learn to overcome your fear of embarrassment.
